Yen Surges to Highest Level Since February on Rate Hike Expectations
The yen has strengthened to its highest level since February, surpassing the peak reached after coordinated intervention by Japan and the US. The currency gained as much as 1.1% against the dollar, reaching a price of 154.56, up from last week's low of 160.39.
The rally is driven by growing expectations for Bank of Japan rate hikes, as well as speculation over a potential shift in the Government Pension Investment Fund's asset allocation. JPMorgan Chase & Co strategists note that a further unwind of sizable short positions could accelerate the yen's gains if it strengthens past 155 per dollar.
Japan's top foreign exchange official Atsushi Mimura remains committed to maintaining the yen, saying there's been no change in his fighting stance on the currency. However, this statement comes amidst a reversal in sentiment that has seen the yen regain strength after weeks of weakness.
