Yen Surges to Seven-Month High as BOJ Rate Hike Bets Gain Momentum
The Japanese yen has reached a seven-month high against the US dollar, trading at ¥152.89 per dollar on September 8. This surge is largely due to increased bets that the Bank of Japan (BOJ) will raise interest rates at its upcoming policy meeting on September 17-18.
Reuters reported that investors are increasingly positioning for a 25-basis-point increase in the policy rate, which would take it to 1.25% from the current 1%. The BOJ has maintained a tightening bias and continues to raise its policy rate as Japan's economy grows.
The strong yen poses a challenge for Japanese exporters, whose earnings are reduced when converted into domestic currency due to exchange-rate movements. The BOJ has identified foreign-exchange developments as a risk to its economic and price outlook.
