Yen Surges to Strongest Level in a Month on BOJ Rate-Hike Speculation

The yen has seen a rapid increase in buying over the past day, pushing the dollar-yen pair to its strongest level in roughly a month. The pair touched 155.30 on the morning of the 4th, with speculation surrounding the Bank of Japan's (BOJ) rate-hike acceleration and fading expectations for near-term U.S. tightening driving the yen's surge.

The trigger for this increase came when Federal Reserve Governor Waller referenced signs of slowing inflation in a speech on the 3rd. He indicated that if the trend continues, he would support holding the policy rate steady at the September 15-16 Federal Open Market Committee meeting, leading to dollar selling and further yen buying.

Speculation surrounding the BOJ's potential for consecutive rate hikes and larger hike increments is also lending support to yen buying. BOJ Policy Board Member Hajime Takata mentioned the possibility of these measures in a press conference on the 2nd, with markets already pricing in a 0.25% hike at the September 17-18 policy meeting.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent's request for rate hikes during a meeting with BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda has also added to the momentum. Market participants note that suspicion of the Treasury Secretary holding information the market doesn't may keep yen buying persistent, particularly given the Government Pension Investment Fund's (GPIF) potential review of its basic portfolio.

The August U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) release and the BOJ's monetary policy meeting next week will be key catalysts for dollar-yen direction. If the CPI data confirms persistent inflationary pressure above expectations, rate-hike bets for the FOMC would likely reignite and strengthen dollar buying.
