Yen Surges to Strongest Level in Over a Month

The Japanese yen has strengthened to its strongest level in over a month, reaching as high as 155.25 per dollar on Friday morning. This sudden gain is attributed to increased bets that the Bank of Japan will be more hawkish than expected when it meets on September 17-18.

Masahiko Loo, senior fixed income strategist at State Street Investment Management in Tokyo, believes that markets are reassessing a more hawkish BOJ path. He notes that 'markets are finally starting to buy into the idea that Japan may continue normalizing policy into 2027.'

With no clear evidence of official action, analysts say that the yen's surge reflects expectations of a Bank of Japan interest rate hike. The Japanese currency is now on track for its strongest week in over a month, with a 2.5% gain this week.
