Yen Traders on High Alert as Currency Struggles with Fundamentals
The Japanese yen remains under pressure from authorities amid persistent weakness, with traders on alert for potential intervention.
The currency traded around 159.3 per dollar on Thursday, hovering near the key psychological level of 160 per dollar, and is struggling to gain momentum despite subdued US inflation data reducing pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates.
The yen's weakness is attributed to longer-term fundamentals, including wide interest rate differentials, mounting fiscal concerns, and elevated energy and import costs. This has resulted in a 7.2% rise in producer prices in July, easing slightly from 7.3% in June but still above forecasts.
The Bank of Japan's summary of opinions from the July meeting highlighted growing risks of accelerating inflation, with one board member suggesting that the pace of interest rate hikes could accelerate.
