Yen Under Pressure as BoJ Guidance Meets Fed Surprise Risk
The Japanese yen's trajectory is being influenced by two key factors: the Bank of Japan's (BoJ) forward guidance and the risk of a surprise policy move from the Federal Reserve, according to MUFG Bank.
According to MUFG's analysis, the BoJ's continued ultra-loose monetary policy is a primary driver of the yen's weakness. Despite market speculation about a potential shift, the BoJ has maintained its yield curve control framework and negative interest rate policy, offering little in the way of hawkish signals.
The risk of a surprise from the Federal Reserve is another critical variable identified by MUFG. While the market has largely priced in a peak in US interest rates, any unexpected hawkish shift could trigger a sharp rally in the dollar and further weaken the yen.
