Yen Weakness Continues Despite Intervention Efforts
The USD/JPY currency pair has returned to positive territory, with the yen continuing to weaken despite intervention efforts. The Japanese yen rose to 159.53 on Thursday, but its gains have since faded, leaving markets on alert for possible further intervention by the authorities.
The yen's weakness can be attributed to several fundamental factors, including a wide interest rate differential, rising fiscal risks, and elevated energy and import costs. Despite softer US inflation data, which eased pressure on the Federal Reserve and reduced the likelihood of an imminent rate hike, the yen failed to gain traction.
Japan's producer prices rose 7.2% year-on-year in July, slightly below the 7.3% recorded in June and the 7.4% forecast. The Bank of Japan's summary of opinions from the July meeting noted growing risks of accelerating inflation, with one board member acknowledging that the pace of rate hikes could quicken.
From a technical analysis perspective, USD/JPY is forming a consolidation range around the 159.33 level, with a move lower towards 159.20 expected to be followed by a move higher to 160.50. The MACD indicator supports this scenario, with its signal line above zero and pointing upwards.
