Yen Yawns After Strong Consumption Print as Fed Hawks Dominate
The Japanese Yen saw little movement after a strong consumption print in July, but it was enough to push USD/JPY above 160.00. However, this test of the handle was short-lived as the pair dropped back down by around 0.2%. The US Federal Reserve's recent hawkish stance has led to a repricing of interest rate expectations, neutralizing the differential argument that had been weighing on the Yen.
The Bank of Japan (BoJ) is under pressure to tighten monetary policy and hike interest rates, but this move would come at a time when the US Federal Reserve is also expected to raise rates. This has led to a debate about whether the BoJ should lean against inflation or maintain its current stance. The BoJ's decision will be closely watched by markets, particularly in light of the upcoming G20 meeting.
The July retail figures showed a 4% year-over-year increase in retail trade, exceeding expectations and providing evidence of domestic demand. However, this positive data did little to boost the Yen, which was instead influenced by the broader market sentiment and interest rate expectations. The USD/JPY pair remains near the 160.00 level, with the next levels of resistance at 160.50 and 161.00.
