Yen's Fragile Rally Hinges on BOJ Policy Clarity

The Japanese yen's recent buying interest is fragile and may not sustain without further monetary policy follow-through from the Bank of Japan, according to a note from BNY.

The bank's strategists point out that the BOJ has been cautious in its approach, leaving traders uncertain about future rate hikes or balance sheet normalization. This ambiguity has kept the yen under pressure against the US dollar, with USD/JPY trading at elevated levels.

The divergence between the Bank of Japan and the Federal Reserve is also a key factor influencing the yen's trajectory. While the Fed has maintained high interest rates to combat inflation, the BOJ has been slower to tighten, keeping Japanese yields low and making the yen less attractive for carry trades.
