Yen's Shocking 1.2% Surge Exposes Fragile Global Markets
The yen experienced a sudden and significant spike of 1.2% against the dollar in just one hour, sparking warnings from deVere Group CEO Nigel Green about the fragility of global markets.
The surge occurred after a Bank of Japan board member hinted at an interest-rate increase, with swaps markets now pricing in a hike at this month's policy meeting.
Nigel Green notes that a currency moving more than 1% in under an hour on a single comment from a policymaker indicates 'positioning has become incredibly stretched.'
The move was not contained to Tokyo, with the broad measure of dollar strength slipping by as much as 0.3%, emerging-market currencies climbing, and the yen jumping about 1% against the euro within minutes.
