Yen's Sudden Surge Sparks Speculation of Government Intervention
The Japanese yen continued its upward trend on Thursday, holding steady at 158.88 per dollar after a brief surge in the previous session that left market participants wondering if government authorities were involved.
The rally was broad-based, with the euro falling roughly 1% against the yen and sterling dropping 1.15%, both currencies nursing losses in early Asia trade.
Currency strategist Carol Kong at Commonwealth Bank of Australia downplayed the significance of the move, saying it wasn't a big deal and didn't think it was an intervention.
The sudden jump in the yen's value has been attributed to a possible rate check, with some market participants speculating that government authorities may have been involved.
