Yield Shock and Dollar Weakness Rock Global Markets

A recent surge in the 30-year Treasury yield to its highest level since 2007 has sparked concerns about the impact on global markets. The yield, which has held above 5% for over 27 consecutive days, is seen as a 'double whammy' to investors by Rajeev De Mello of Gama Asset Management.

The increase in yields is attributed to the confirmation of Kevin Warsh as Fed Chair and his preference for sparse public communication. This has led to uncertainty among investors, who are now left guessing where the committee stands on monetary policy. Additionally, an unusually high number of Fed officials favor an immediate rate hike, further contributing to the yield's rise.

The situation is complicated by the recent intervention in the yen market by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The US provided support to Japan to prop up the yen, using euros as a mechanism to avoid dumping dollars into the Treasury market. This move is seen as a signal that Washington wants a weaker dollar or at least a stronger yen.

The numbers don't line up with traditional expectations, as the dollar is weakening despite rising yields. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index has fallen about 2% since its June peak, and the term premium on 30-year Treasuries jumped to 1.56%, the highest since 2013.
