Yuan Stabilizes as Dollar Weakens Ahead of China's Politburo Meeting
The Chinese yuan strengthened to its highest level in nearly a week as the US dollar weakened. The People's Bank of China set a firmer daily midpoint 'fix' at 6.7911 per dollar, giving the onshore yuan room to trade 2% on either side of that level.
The yuan initially rose to 6.7661 before easing back to 6.7695, while the offshore rate hovered near 6.7701. Analysts say this tweak is consistent with managed volatility, where the PBOC adjusts the midpoint to anchor trading ranges and make it more costly for markets to push the exchange rate too far.
However, traders are looking ahead to the Politburo meeting in late July, which typically sets the economic agenda for the second half of the year. Barclays expects officials to focus on implementing already announced measures rather than unveiling a new stimulus package, which could keep the currency trading in a relatively tight range near recent levels.
The PBOC's daily midpoint fix acts as an anchor for onshore trading, shaping how far and fast the exchange rate can move in a single session. When the fix is set firmer even when spot is already strong, it signals a desire for orderly moves and narrower spot-to-fix gaps, rather than chasing trends.
