$105K Scam: Atlanta Man Arrested for Posing as Clerk of Court Employee
The Escambia County Sheriff's Office has announced the arrest of an Atlanta man who allegedly defrauded a local resident out of $105,000.
According to Sheriff Chip Simmons, Evera Brown, 36, posed as an employee of the Santa Rosa County Clerk of Court and informed the victim that they had missed jury duty and would need to pay to avoid going to jail.
The victim met Brown in the parking lot of The Home Depot, where they turned over the money. Simmons warned citizens not to fall prey to similar scams, stating that 'a legitimate government entity will not call you up, will not try to keep you on the phone, will not demand money and certainly will not meet you in the parking lot of The Home Depot.'
Brown is set to be extradited to Escambia County Jail on either August 3 or 4.
