13 Market Leaders Hit 52-Week Lows as S&P 500 Returns 0.2%
Thirteen US and Canada-listed stocks with market values above $500 million have hit new yearly lows, according to Trefis. This list includes some of the largest and most established names in the market, such as McDonald's (MCD), which has a market value of about $181.3 billion.
The presence of such a large company on this list raises a critical question: is this weakness isolated, or is it a sign of something broader? The S&P 500 returned +0.2% over the last month, while McDonald's stock declined 6.8% over the same period.
Some of the other names on the list include L3Harris Technologies (LHX), Textron (TXT), and Wingstop (WING). These companies have seen their revenue grow despite their declining stock prices. For example, L3Harris Technologies saw its revenue grow 7.3% over the last twelve months.
A 52-week-low list is a blunt instrument that flags stocks that have performed poorly but reveals nothing about why. It can mark a permanently damaged business or a temporarily out-of-favor one whose underlying operations remain sound.
