$1.7 Million Water Heater Return Scam Exposed in St. Louis Home Depot Scheme

A group of four men has been accused of operating a large-scale water heater return scam in the St. Louis area, netting them over $1.7 million in Home Depot gift cards.

The alleged scheme, which spanned from March to May 18, involved obtaining used water heaters in California and transporting them by rental truck to various states, where they were returned at Home Depot stores with altered serial numbers and manufacture dates.

A traffic stop on May 14 in Arnold proved pivotal in the investigation, as authorities found 23 water heaters and multiple fake California identification cards in a rented GMC box truck driven by two of the accused men, Jose Antonio Alvarez-Raya and Aron Suarez-Ruiz. The pair had just returned two water heaters at the Vogel Road Home Depot, receiving $1,521.24 in gift cards.

The indictment alleges that the men altered the identifying information on the used appliances to make them appear eligible for return, exploiting a consumer protection system designed to allow legitimate customers to exchange or return faulty products.
