$29m Awarded to Family of UN Engineer Killed in 737 Max Crash
A Chicago jury has awarded $29m in damages to the family of Mick Ryan, a UN engineer who died in the 2019 Boeing 737 Max crash in Addis Ababa. The verdict marks the first time Boeing has admitted full responsibility for the disaster that claimed 156 lives just six minutes after take-off.
Naoise Connolly Ryan, the widow of the deceased, expressed relief and vindication upon hearing Boeing's admission of liability. She had been seeking damages on behalf of her late husband and the other victims' families in a civil case against the aircraft manufacturer.
The Ethiopian Airlines crash occurred on March 10, 2019, and was one of two incidents involving the Boeing 737 Max that led to a global grounding of the aircraft model. The crashes resulted in the deaths of over 300 people.
