$3 Trillion AI Commitments Not as Scary as They Seem
The artificial intelligence industry has reportedly made significant commitments to future spending plans, with leading names like Alphabet, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms earmarking $3 trillion for AI-related investments.
This figure is based on an analysis by The Wall Street Journal, which dug into the disclosure documents of these companies and found that they have collectively committed to $3 trillion in off-balance-sheet liabilities, including data center leases and technology purchase commitments.
Some investors were initially shocked by this news, particularly as it affected companies like GE Vernova and Vertiv, which benefit directly from the massive AI build-out. However, experts argue that these planned commitments are not necessarily a new problem for the industry.
The reason is that most investors already understood that Big Tech's collective capital expenditure budget of $750 billion for 2026 was just the beginning of a multi-year spending spree of comparable annual amounts.
