$3.1 Million Fine for Boeing's Safety Violations
Boeing has been fined $3.1 million by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for safety violations related to its aircraft production. The fine was paid in January, but it wasn't publicly disclosed until September 2nd.
The penalties stem from a series of regulatory lapses, including a January 2024 incident where a door plug came off an Alaska Airlines flight mid-air due to missing bolts. Investigators found that four key bolts were missing.
The FAA's probe also uncovered a pattern of persistent misconduct at Boeing's Renton and Wichita plants, where hundreds of quality system failures were detected over six months from September 2023 to February 2024.
Senator Richard Blumenthal, who chairs the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, criticized the fine as being too lenient. He argued that such fines are easily absorbed by Boeing as the 'cost of doing business,' and don't serve as a deterrent to dangerous behavior.
