The US Air Force has allocated $3.5 billion to its sixth-generation fighter programme, dubbed the Boeing F-47. This investment is part of the fiscal year 2027 budget request and represents a significant increase in funding for the project.

The F-47 will replace the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor as the premier air superiority fighter for the US military. The new aircraft is expected to enter service in the early-to-mid 2030s, with plans to procure at least 185 units.

Boeing was awarded the contract to build the F-47, beating out Lockheed Martin in a surprise move. Analysts point to Boeing's more producible design and the Pentagon's desire to maintain competition in the defence industry as factors contributing to this decision.
