$38 Billion Bet on AI Memory Demand: SK Hynix Invests Big
South Korea's SK Hynix has committed to investing $38.3 billion in new memory chip plants, setting its sights on meeting growing demand for AI memory.
The company's board approved the massive investment, which will be split between two domestic sites in Yongin and Cheongju. The funds will be used to build a second DRAM fab in Yongin, called Y2, as well as a new NAND plant in Cheongju.
The move is seen as a response to the surge in demand for AI memory, particularly high-bandwidth memory that feeds Nvidia's AI accelerators. SK Hynix already supplies nearly all of the stacked memory used in Nvidia's high-end GPUs.
While the investment is significant, it also comes with risks. The capacity from these new plants will not be available until 2029 and 2031, respectively, and demand for AI memory can shift quickly.
