$5 Gas Prices Could Spark 'Shock' for Walmart Shoppers
Walmart (NYSE: WMT), the world's largest retailer, is closely monitoring fuel prices as analysts believe that gasoline above $4 per gallon has not yet significantly impacted customer behavior. However, Jefferies analyst Corey Tarlowe found in a recent report that Walmart executives see $5 per gallon gas as a potential 'shock' that could alter shopping patterns across their massive customer base.
Tarlowe's research indicates that Walmart management views fuel prices within the $3-to-$4 range as manageable, while prices between $4 and $5 create economic pressure. Anything at or above $5 is considered a critical threshold for consumer sentiment, with Tarlowe noting that this level of gas price could have significant effects on Walmart shoppers.
The retailer's large customer base, which includes approximately 280 million customers and members per week, makes it particularly vulnerable to changes in fuel prices. With the average U.S. gasoline price climbing from $2.81 in January to $4.48 in May before easing back to roughly $4.05 in June, Walmart has responded by announcing hundreds of price rollbacks across its stores.
Walmart's finance team flagged that sustained high fuel costs could ripple through the broader food supply chain due to direct ties between petroleum prices and fertilizer production as well as transportation logistics.
