$750 Billion Bet on Housing Market: Big Banks Pour Billions into Reviving Affordability

The nation's largest bank, JPMorgan Chase, has announced a plan to invest $750 billion in housing market initiatives over the next decade. The American Dream Initiative aims to build or preserve one million affordable housing units and help 500,000 customers purchase homes, with 200,000 of them first-time buyers.

This move is part of a larger effort by big banks, including Wells Fargo, Citibank, and Bank of America, which have each announced significant housing initiatives. JPMorgan's investment will go towards supporting down payments, closing costs, and affordable mortgage options for homebuyers, as well as zoning reform and new homebuilding efforts.

The move is driven by a nationwide housing supply shortage and the decline in mortgage business over the past few years. The number of mortgage originations at large banks has hovered below 500,000 since the pandemic, with many younger buyers priced out and older buyers 'locked in' to homes with low rates.

Banks are also expanding their support for efforts like manufactured housing innovation and policy advocacy. Citi's Blueprint for Housing Opportunity Initiative aims to preserve and construct 250,000 homes, while its partner Bank of America has provided $15 billion in loans and grants since 2019 to support affordable mortgage options.
