Abbott's Data Center Guidelines Gain Industry Support
Texas Governor Greg Abbott's data center guidelines have gained traction as Microsoft, Hut 8, and Equinix commit to complying with them. The standards require data centers to pay for their own electric infrastructure, reuse water, reduce electricity costs, and preserve neighborhood quality of life.
Governor Abbott established the guidelines earlier this summer, directing the Public Utilities Commission of Texas (PUCT) and Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to ensure data centers meet specific requirements. These include paying for their electric infrastructure, reusing water, reducing electricity costs, and preserving neighborhood quality of life.
The PUCT and ERCOT will examine each data center project and require transparency on ownership, controlling interests, projected electricity demand, and plans for on-site generation or other measures to reduce reliance on the ERCOT grid. Data centers that fail to comply with ERCOT's audit process may have their approval denied.
