AbbVie's Myeloma Breakthrough Fails to Dent JNJ Gains
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) shares rose around 1% to $277.955 on Thursday afternoon, despite AbbVie's experimental multiple-myeloma drug etentamig posting impressive results in a clinical trial. The treatment achieved a 74% response rate and reduced the risk of disease progression or death by 60% compared to standard therapies.
A key point is that AbbVie's success with etentamig is seen as category expansion, rather than a direct threat to J&J's Carvykti franchise. Reuters noted that etentamig currently appears most differentiated after CAR-T therapy, not as an immediate substitute for Carvykti.
J&J's second-quarter results highlighted the importance of its Innovative Medicine segment, with Carvykti being a major growth driver behind 6.8% operational growth in this area.
