Abel Leads Berkshire into AI-Driven Future with Strategic Portfolio Shifts

Greg Abel's first year as chief executive of Berkshire Hathaway has brought significant changes to the conglomerate's investment strategy. The $360 billion portfolio now holds a greater emphasis on technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and infrastructure, reflecting a departure from Warren Buffett's era. According to Abel, the Google parent Alphabet was added to the portfolio last year specifically as a bet on AI, with Berkshire currently holding approximately $38 billion in shares.

Abel views access to power as the next major bottleneck in the AI boom, with Berkshire positioning its energy business to supply data centers with electricity. The conglomerate already derives 8% of its power load from data centers in Iowa and plans to only supply new data centers if it doesn't push up electricity costs for existing customers.

The five-largest stock holdings of Berkshire Hathaway are Apple, Alphabet, American Express, Coca-Cola, and Bank of America. While Apple's position remains a cornerstone of the portfolio, Berkshire has sold more than 30 million shares of Bank of America over the past two years, shrinking its stake by approximately 53%. The conglomerate is also navigating the AI boom through its energy operations, betting that reliable and affordable power will be the next constraint on AI development.
