Ackman's Big Bets on Financial Titans

Pershing Square Capital Management, led by Bill Ackman, has made headlines with its latest investments. In a shareholder letter accompanying the second-quarter earnings report, Pershing revealed six new positions, four of which are financial stocks.

The quartet includes payment card titans Visa (NYSE:V) and Mastercard (NYSE:MA), data and analysis specialist S&P Global (NYSE:SPGI), and securities market operator Intercontinental Exchange (NYSE:ICE).

Ackman highlighted the 'capital-light toll takers' aspect of Mastercard and Visa, which act as middlemen in transactions without taking on risk. He also noted that their volume-based business model makes them a good hedge against inflation.

The Pershing Square founder and CEO praised S&P Global's dominant businesses, including ratings, indexes, and Platts, which provides price reporting services for commodities and energy markets.

Intercontinental Exchange is another key player in futures and options exchanges, with its gold-standard ICE Brent Futures contract widely used for crude oil trading worldwide.
