Ackman's Microsoft Bet Pays Off as Golden Cross Looms
Hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman has long been optimistic about Microsoft's prospects, and his conviction is reflected in Pershing Square Capital Management's significant investment in the software giant. In a move that may be seen as a vote of confidence in Microsoft's future growth, Ackman's firm made Microsoft one of its largest disclosed investments, with 5.65 million shares valued at approximately $2.09 billion.
The technical picture is now aligning with Ackman's conviction, as the software giant's 50-day moving average inches toward crossing above its 200-day moving average, a pattern known as a Golden Cross. Crossing over would be a sign that short-term momentum is overtaking the longer-term trend, and could attract another layer of momentum-oriented investors to the stock.
Microsoft's chart may flash a bullish signal now, but Ackman placed his bet much earlier than the current technical setup emerged. The company's strong rally over recent months has pushed the stock above both moving averages, with MSFT stock climbing over 25% in the past six months and over 9% in the past month.
While a Golden Cross alone rarely changes a company's long-term outlook, it does reflect investor behavior. If Microsoft's AI strategy continues to translate into durable revenue growth across Azure, Copilot and the broader software ecosystem, the strengthening technical picture could support further gains.
