Agentic AI Takes Center Stage as Prompt Engineering Fades

This era is fading quickly as enterprises move past simple chatbot interactions toward autonomous agents that plan, execute, and self-correct.

Cisco and Omdia's 2026 survey of 650 executives found that 80% believe their company's survival will depend on agentic AI by 2027. Nearly 60% of employees will need to upskill beyond prompting to supervise, audit, and trust these systems.

The seven capabilities poised to outweigh prompt engineering as the defining professional skill set of 2027 are governance, evaluation, orchestration, agent supervision, workflow and systems design, AI security and threat response, and applied AI fluency for non-technical roles.
