AgriCapture and Google Team Up to Save 5.4 Billion Gallons in Texas Watershed
A groundbreaking partnership between AgriCapture and Google aims to revolutionize water conservation in Texas's Trinity River Basin. The project, which kicked off on September 1, 2026, will convert 6,000 acres of rice farmland to water-saving irrigation systems, targeting a significant reduction in water usage.
Rice farming is one of the most water-intensive crops globally, with a water footprint exceeding 170 gallons per pound of finished grain. The Trinity River Basin flood-irrigates about 140,000 acres of rice each year, putting immense pressure on the watershed. AgriCapture will work directly with Texas rice farmers to optimize irrigation systems and move away from continuous flooding.
Google is providing the upfront capital for the project, as well as performance-based payments to farmers for the water they save. The company has committed over $500 million to water infrastructure projects globally, supporting 165 water stewardship initiatives across 97 watersheds.
