AI Adoption Outpacing K-12 Readiness, IBM Study Warns

A new study by IBM reveals a significant gap between AI adoption in K-12 schools and their readiness to manage it. The survey, conducted among over 2,000 educators and parents, found that AI is already routine in secondary classrooms, with 76% of middle school teachers and 73% of high school teachers using it at least weekly.

However, educator preparation is not keeping pace, with only 20% saying they have received extensive AI training. Lack of training or professional development was cited as the top barrier to supporting AI literacy by educators, followed closely by limited AI curriculum and instructional materials.

The study also found that parents want a larger role in how schools use AI, with 77% wanting input on how it is used in their child's classroom. However, only 20% of parents clearly understand the AI guidance their child receives at school.

To address this gap, IBM has launched the IBM K-12 AI leaders fellowship, a professional learning initiative for superintendents and education leaders to equip them with practical knowledge and tools to guide responsible AI adoption.
