AI Agents Ready to Trigger Autonomous Payments
AI-powered agents are already assisting consumers in making purchases, but they can't finalize transactions without human permission. Five companies - Fair Isaac, Shopify, Visa, Amazon, and Affirm - are developing infrastructure to enable autonomous payments.
Consumers have been using AI agents for various tasks, including picking their next flight or router, but few allow the agent to complete the purchase on its own. Visa's CEO said in July that trust is key to accelerating adoption of agentic commerce, which means consumers must feel confident about secure payments and authorization.
Five US-listed companies are poised for disruption: Fair Isaac (FICO), Shopify (SHOP), Visa (V), Amazon (AMZN), and Affirm (AFRM). These companies have the infrastructure in place to enable autonomous transactions. For example, Fair Isaac's FICO Platform is where AI decisioning layers resolve queries from regional and money-center banks.
Shopify has a Universal Commerce Protocol that agents can transact against on behalf of returning buyers. Visa has built agentic rails into its Visa-as-a-Service stack and told investors it is the trust arbiter. Amazon owns both the agent and the storefront, making it a vertically integrated bet. Affirm offers transparent installment credit with fixed schedules and no fine print.
