AI Agents Reshape Cybersecurity Jobs as Talent Shortage Persists
Cybersecurity jobs are evolving as organizations increasingly adopt AI agents to manage tasks and improve efficiency. A report from the AI Workforce Consortium, founded by Cisco and other technology companies, found that cybersecurity job postings requiring AI skills doubled year over year across G7 countries.
The demand for cybersecurity roles in these countries grew 9.5% during the six months ending in March 2026, with more than 4.8 million positions remaining unfilled globally. According to Omar Santos, distinguished engineer for AI Security at Cisco, entry-level positions are being reshaped faster than others.
SOC analysts are becoming AI agent managers, overseeing and orchestrating agentic systems. Human judgment becomes more important as AI agents take on more responsibility, with experienced professionals needed to validate AI-generated results and assess the risk behind them.
The consortium's research found that demand for ethical reasoning in cybersecurity roles increased 533% year over year, while stakeholder engagement rose 125%. Cisco's report also highlighted a need for organizations to invest in people who can manage AI systems, with only 25% of cybersecurity leaders investing in employees' ability to do so.
