AI Boom vs Internet Bubble: How the Current Industrial Buildout Differs
The current artificial intelligence buildout is similar to the massive industrial expansion of the American railroad in the 19th century, according to recent data. However, investors may be concerned that history is repeating itself, as it did with the late-1990s internet boom and subsequent bust.
One key difference between the two periods is the profitability of AI companies. In 1999, about 75% of new internet companies were operating at a net loss, whereas today's top tech IPOs have a GAAP profitability rate of around 50%. Companies like Alphabet, Advanced Micro Devices, and Micron are highly profitable, with Micron generating $28.86 billion in net income last quarter.
Another key difference is the valuation of AI companies compared to internet companies during the boom. The average price-to-earnings ratio for internet companies at their peak was over 200x, whereas leading AI names have more reasonable P/E ratios due to geopolitical concerns. Dell has a P/E ratio of 28.52x, and Cisco peaked with a 200x P/E.
While the sheer scale of the AI buildout draws comparisons to the internet bubble, it appears that the current AI boom is on a stronger foundation. The AI companies are backed by immediate hardware utilization, robust profitability, and low valuations.
