AI Chip Market Sees Rotation Trade as Second-Tier Names Decline
Shares of Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD), Marvell Technology (NASDAQ:MRVL), and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) plummeted on Tuesday, with AMD down 8%, Marvell sinking 7%, and Intel falling 6%. In contrast, NVIDIA's (NASDAQ:NVDA) stock remains steady at 0.5%.
The declines in the second-tier AI chip names are part of a broader rotation trade, where investors are consolidating exposure into the leaders of the AI infrastructure market. This move is driven by the high valuations of AMD and Arm Holdings (NASDAQ:ARM), which trades at a staggering 289x trailing earnings.
Intel's recent Q2 2026 revenue report showed a 25.4% year-over-year increase, with Data Center and AI revenue up 59%. However, despite this strong performance, Intel's stock is still down 6%, highlighting that the sell-off is not earnings-driven but rather a rotation story.
With Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) set to report their Q2 earnings after the close on July 29, investors will be closely watching for hyperscaler capital expenditure commentary. This guidance will either validate or accelerate the rotation already underway.
