AI Data Wars Erupt Over Spirit Airlines' Email Archive
The AI data wars have begun in earnest as Google, Mercor, and Micro1 bid for Spirit Airlines' vast email archive. The archive contains over 100 million emails, 500 million Teams messages, 30 million lines of code, and employee records dating back to 1986.
Google emerged as the initial winner with a $10 million bid, but Micro1 submitted a late offer of $12.5 million, topping Google's price. Ali Ansari, CEO of Micro1, believes that Spirit Airlines' data is invaluable for training more capable AI models and argues that Google's initial bid was too low.
The sale agreement requires that the data be de-identified before it can be released to Google, but the links between records will remain intact. This has raised concerns about employee privacy, with the flight attendants' union objecting to the sale on grounds of potential re-identification.
