AI-Driven Cyberattacks Surge 56%, Cost Businesses $6.04 Million Per Breach

The latest report from IBM reveals that AI-driven cyberattacks have surged by 56% in the past year, with more than one in four organizations experiencing a malicious attack. This increase has led to significant financial losses for businesses, with AI-driven attacks costing an average of $6.04 million per breach.

According to the report, attackers are increasingly using AI to automate attacks, identify vulnerabilities, and operate at greater scale, reducing the time needed to exploit weaknesses and increasing the potential financial impact on businesses.

The most common form of AI-driven attack identified in the study was deepfake impersonation, accounting for 45% of incidents. Other forms of AI-generated malware, phishing, and communications accounted for 19%, 17%, and 14% respectively.

IBM also found that generative AI has made social engineering attacks cheaper to create and harder to detect, allowing attackers to produce convincing content and manipulate victims at greater scale.
