AI-Driven Job Shifts Loom Large for Indian Workforce
India's workforce may face significant changes as Generative AI (GenAI) adoption is expected to substitute between 8% and 12% of non-agricultural jobs in the country, according to a recent Goldman Sachs assessment.
The report suggests that while some existing roles could see reductions in human involvement, a larger share of jobs could be reshaped as employees use AI to automate repetitive activities, analyse information, generate content, and support decision-making.
This shift is likely to be particularly visible in knowledge-intensive sectors where employees perform tasks involving documentation, research, analysis, coding, customer support, and information processing.
However, the bigger workforce challenge may be managing the transition rather than simply responding to job losses. If 42% to 48% of non-farm jobs are complemented by AI, employees will increasingly need to develop the ability to work alongside AI systems rather than compete with them directly.
