AI-Driven Memory Demand Creates '100-Year Flood' Pricing Crisis
Apple CEO Tim Cook has sounded the alarm about an unprecedented memory and storage pricing crisis in the tech industry. He described it as a '100-year flood' scenario, where prices have surged due to the explosive growth of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The cost of memory and storage semiconductors has increased fourfold over a 12-month period, according to the Wall Street Journal. This has led major technology manufacturers like Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Nintendo to implement price adjustments for their products.
Cook acknowledged that Apple had initially attempted to shield customers from these escalating expenses but ultimately determined it was untenable. The company announced price increases for its Mac computer and iPad tablet lines in July, citing memory component cost pressures as the justification.
