AI-Driven Memory Shortage Hits Amazon's Hardware Lines

The AI boom is causing a global memory shortage, driving up prices and impacting consumer electronics. Amazon's recent price hikes on several of its hardware lines are a prime example of this trend.

According to Counterpoint Research, DRAM prices jumped 80% to 90% in the first quarter of 2026, while other industry data shows some memory products selling at multiples of last year's prices. More recent market data even shows DDR5 memory prices climbing several hundred percent from a year ago.

The shortage is becoming a supply problem with a consumer price tag, as seen with Amazon's latest move to raise prices across several of its hardware lines. The Echo Dot saw a 60% increase, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max rose by 42%, and the base Kindle increased by 36%. Several eero networking products also became more expensive.

Amazon attributed these increases to higher memory and storage costs, which are being driven by AI data centers consuming enormous quantities of memory. The squeeze is particularly severe due to the manufacturing capacity that could otherwise support conventional DRAM being reallocated towards HBM, a type of high-bandwidth memory used in AI infrastructure.
