A former Google DeepMind researcher has sounded the alarm on artificial intelligence's potential to cause harm. Bilal Chughtai, who recently resigned from the AI lab, expressed concerns that the rapid development of AI could lead to catastrophic consequences.

Chughtai pointed out that the pace of progress since he entered the field in early 2022 has been 'staggering', with increasingly autonomous AI agents being developed. He warned that if left unchecked, these systems could soon surpass human control and take actions resulting in 'the permanent disempowerment or death of humanity'.

Chughtai emphasized the need to slow down AI development and focus on ensuring the safety of such systems. He argued that tech firms should pull back from what he described as a 'manic race' to build ever-more-powerful systems, and instead prioritize alignment with human values.
