AI-Fueled Share Issuance Hits Record High as Buybacks Provide Market Support
The investment landscape is changing due to artificial intelligence (AI) spending, which is generating substantial financing needs for U.S. companies. As a result, these firms are issuing more shares to investors, leading to a record high in corporate equity issuance in 2026, according to Goldman Sachs.
Goldman Sachs data shows that in the second quarter of this year, U.S. firms raised $252 billion through initial public offerings (IPOs), follow-on offerings, convertible securities, and SPACs, surpassing the previous quarterly record of $234 billion set in the first quarter of 2021.
However, Goldman Sachs strategist Ben Snider pointed out that the increase in equity supply is more a return to normal levels than a market-threatening issuance boom. Despite the substantial issuance volume, Snider noted that current equity offerings remain below historical averages relative to the overall size of the stock market.
