AI Hackers Target Critical Infrastructure, Over 100 Companies Sound Alarm
More than 100 companies, including OpenAI and Microsoft, have sounded an alarm over AI hackers targeting critical infrastructure. In a joint open letter released on August 28, 2026, the companies warned that the gap between AI's benefits for security teams and its potential to aid attackers could become harder to manage.
The letter called on governments, businesses, AI developers, and cybersecurity firms to work together to improve digital security. The companies want stronger internal security practices, including identifying weaknesses in systems and applying stricter security checks to software and services, including those built with AI-generated code.
The group also wants the cybersecurity industry to prepare products specifically for the new threat, and for governments to share cyber threat information across borders and between authorities and industry. They are also asking for public funding for cybersecurity and better coordination when attacks affect critical services.
