AI Infrastructure Costs Skyrocket to $3 Trillion
Stock markets are experiencing mixed trading conditions on this day, August 17th. Despite the uncertainty in the air, some assets like crude oil, gold, and silver are modestly higher. The US dollar is also dipping in value. This backdrop sets the stage for a contentious debate surrounding the true cost of investing in AI infrastructure.
The Wall Street Journal has shed light on an additional $3 trillion in off-balance-sheet obligations incurred by companies like Meta Platforms Inc., Alphabet Inc., and Microsoft Corp. These costs include promises to purchase chips, energy supplies, and future lease payments. While some argue that these expenses will be offset by future revenue and profits, others contend that the added financial burden makes the outlook more grim.
Big Tech firms are not letting up on their aggressive pursuit of AI capabilities, however. Stripe Inc., a payment processing firm, has announced its intention to acquire OpenRouter Inc. for $7 billion. The startup's CEO, Alex Atallah, had previously described his company as 'the AI equivalent of Stripe'.
Investors are keeping a close eye on the bond market amid elevated inflation and a global rate-hiking cycle that shows no signs of slowing down. A significant number of interest rate swap markets globally are pricing in expected rate increases over the coming year, with Asia expected to experience the greatest monetary policy tightening.
