AI Infrastructure Investment Expands Beyond Hyperscalers
A recent Goldman Sachs research report has highlighted the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure investment beyond large technology companies, driven by growing demand from enterprises and sovereign nations.
The report notes that AI infrastructure investment continued to broaden in July, with enterprise adoption expanding alongside sovereign AI initiatives and increasing support for cloud providers.
One key trend highlighted in the report is the increasing use of GPU backstop programs by neo-cloud providers. According to Goldman Sachs, these arrangements are expected to support the growth of AI cloud providers while improving compute availability for customers.
The report also highlights a series of AI infrastructure projects announced during July, including Meta's partnership with BlackRock to develop a 1 GW AI data center campus in Texas, and IREN's customer contracts worth USD 2.8 billion. Sharon AI has announced a USD 1.32 billion cloud computing agreement and plans for an AI factory in New Zealand.
Sovereign nations are also investing heavily in AI infrastructure, with initiatives announced in Saudi Arabia, Croatia, and Indonesia. The report points to broader enterprise adoption of AI across industries, including Starbucks' development of proprietary AI-powered tools for inventory management and equipment maintenance, and fintech company Revolut's expanded use of an AI behavioral model.
