AI Power Demand Set to Explode 1,100% by 2033, Straining Global Grids
Global electricity demand from artificial intelligence (AI) is set to skyrocket over the next decade, putting a strain on power grids worldwide. By 2033, global AI power demand is expected to surge more than 1,100% to roughly 315 gigawatts, with the U.S. accounting for about 200 gigawatts of that growth.
The significant increase in electricity usage is attributed to AI data centers, which require hundreds of thousands of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) during training periods. This causes electricity usage to spike by as much as 50% above design capacity.
The U.S. power grid's struggle to keep pace with AI demand has raised concerns about America's ability to maintain its technological edge. Hyperscalers, including Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, have signed Trump's Ratepayer Protection Pledge to cover the costs of building new electricity infrastructure and upgrading existing grids.
The pledge now covers about 80% of electricity delivered to U.S. homes and businesses. However, this may not be enough to meet the growing demand for power from AI data centers.
