AI-Powered Cyberattacks on Critical Systems Spark Industry-Wide Warning
A coalition of major tech and cybersecurity organizations, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services, has issued a warning about the growing threat of AI-powered cyberattacks. The group claims that these attacks could become more widespread and sophisticated within months, putting critical systems such as hospitals, water treatment plants, power systems, internet infrastructure, and other essential services at risk.
The letter, signed by over 100 organizations, argues that AI is making advanced hacking capabilities faster, cheaper, and more accessible. This allows attackers to exploit weaknesses with less time and expertise, pointing to persistent vulnerabilities such as unpatched or outdated software, excessive system permissions, weak authentication, misconfigurations, and legacy technology.
A recent CrowdStrike report found that AI-enabled attacks increased 89% in 2025 compared to the previous year. The letter calls on companies and governments to treat cybersecurity as an urgent priority and urges organizations to fix their most serious security gaps and demand stronger safeguards in the software and AI-generated code they use.
Cybersecurity and technology companies are also being asked to constantly test their defenses, share information about emerging threats, and develop AI tools that can help protect critical services. The appeal is voluntary and does not set binding requirements or deadlines.
