AI-Powered Cyberattacks Warned to Escalate Dramatically
More than 100 companies, including tech giants like Google and Microsoft, have signed an open letter warning that artificial intelligence-enabled cyberattacks are about to escalate dramatically. The signatories, which include banks, insurers, security vendors, and other organizations, argue that the current status quo in cybersecurity will not hold up against increasingly sophisticated AI-powered attacks.
The letter warns that hospitals, water treatment plants, and infrastructure that carries internet traffic are among the assets most at risk. It also notes that AI models can amplify the capabilities of attackers by providing them with specialized skills, even if they cannot afford to hire experts themselves.
The signatories call on organizations to prioritize cybersecurity, clear out high-risk weaknesses, and raise standards for AI-generated code. Security vendors are asked to test their products against current AI models and share threat intelligence with critical infrastructure operators.
