AI-Powered Discovery Accelerates Vulnerability Rate as Remediation Lags
Microsoft's latest security release has listed 974 new vulnerabilities, including two Windows privilege-escalation flaws that are already being exploited. The company is moving AI-assisted vulnerability discovery into its engineering workflows, which it claims can autonomously discover weaknesses and generate proof-of-concept code.
The CVE Program reported a sharp increase in published vulnerability records, with 20,709 records in the second quarter of 2026, up over 36% from the first quarter. The program attributes this growth to AI-assisted research, automation, and large-scale analysis.
Microsoft's use of AI has also led to the identification of 16 Windows vulnerabilities, including four critical remote-code-execution flaws, through its MDASH multi-model system. However, experts warn that while AI accelerates discovery, it does not necessarily speed up remediation.
