Microsoft's Juan Lavista Ferres had an epiphany during a meeting with conservationists two years ago. He realized that collecting data for biodiversity research was a huge effort and often took months to years.
Lavista Ferres, the director of Microsoft's AI for Good Lab, decided to assemble a team to develop a solution. The result was Project SPARROW, an AI-powered tool that combines edge computing and artificial intelligence to monitor biodiversity in real-time.
SPARROW uses solar power, cameras, and audio recorders to collect data from remote forests, then sends it back to the cloud for analysis. This process is continuous and can run for over a year without human intervention.
Lavista Ferres said that SPARROW aims to make data collection 'trivial' for conservationists, allowing them to focus on analyzing the data rather than collecting it.
